All throughout awards season, Vice writer-director Adam McKay talked about how he cut a musical number out of his Dick Cheney biopic, forcing all of us to wonder what in God’s name would constitute a musical number tied to George W. Bush’s notorious Veep. That answer is here.
McKay previously teased that he would drop the full scene as a deleted extra on the film’s home release, and Fox debuted it online Monday.
Brittany Howard from the band Alabama Shakes takes lead vocals in the sequence, which was choreographed by Hamilton‘s Andy Blankenbuehler with music by composer Nicholas Britell.
Christian Bale’s Cheney and Steve Carell’s Donald Rumsfeld are seen discussing the shady tactics of Washington, D.C. politics as this ’40s dance number explodes in the background.
“Adam directed the heck out of it; it was really entertaining,” Vice‘s film editor Hank Corwin told The Hollywood Reporter in January. “But what we found was, in the context of the film, it weighed the film down at the wrong time. The film wanted to move quickly in that area, and it would have slowed it down. It was very painful [to cut it].”
With Vice available now digitally ahead of its Blu-ray and DVD release on April 2, this once lost interlude has officially been picked back up from the cutting room floor.
