Somehow the kids keep getting younger. There’s been a plethora of pop culture lately focused on the awkward lives of middle school and high school students, including Big Mouth, Eighth Grade, and PEN15. But the upcoming Seth Rogen-produced movie Good Boys goes back even earlier, focusing on a trio of sixth-grade characters encountering porn, drugs, and drones for the first time.
Despite the youth of the actors and characters involved, the new red band trailer for Good Boys is age-restricted. As Rogen explains to the main actors (Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams, and Brady Noon) in a segment before the trailer, this means they legally can’t watch it: “There’s drugs, there’s violence, there’s swearing, and although we’ve decided it’s okay for you to do those things in the movie, you can’t watch yourselves do them in the trailer…welcome to Hollywood.”
Soundtracked by Fun’s “We Are Young” and Run the Jewels’ riotous “Nobody Speak,” the new Good Boys trailer finds the main characters trying to be cool by stealing alcohol and sneaking into an older kids’ party. In other news, it feels a lot like Superbad, if the characters were six years younger. The parallels with other recent pop culture trends aren’t lost on anyone. When the kids spy on an older neighbor’s make-out session, her boyfriend screams, “hey Stranger Things, go f— yourself!”
Good Boys is set to hit theaters this August. Watch the red band trailer above.
