More than a year after his Best Director win for The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro has a new monster movie to share with everyone. First teased during Super Bowl commercials a few months back, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is an adaptation on Alvin Schwartz’s books of the same name that terrified generations of readers. Del Toro is producing the film, with André Øvredal directing. Now, with the release of the first teaser trailer, viewers get their first in-depth look at this summer’s cinematic horror.
Set in the small town of Mill Valley, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark involves the wealthy Bellows family, whose shadow has loomed large over the local community. One member of the family, Sarah, turned her life into a book of scary stories — a book that starts to transcend time and infect the world outside when a group of teenagers discover her home.
As one character puts it, “you don’t read the book, the book reads you.” As the kids start to explore the book, they suddenly find themselves haunted by grotesque monsters — and even their own bodies, as one girl discovers a horrifying “red spot” on her face. Although longtime fans will recognize classic scenes and monsters like that from the original stories, this version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark differs from the books in that it is a linear narrative rather than a collection of slightly-related tales.
