Fantastic Four director responds to claim that superhero movies never fail: ‘Hold my beer’

Given the recent box office success of Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Venom, Aquaman, and now Captain Marvel it’s easy to forget that the superhero genre can miss as well as hit. One person who hasn’t forgotten that is Josh Trank, the director of 2015’s poorly received Fantastic Four. Confirmation of that came earlier today when Trank responded to a tweet by Torque filmmaker Joseph Kahn that “No superhero movie fails” with a familiar three-word sentence: “Hold my beer.”

Trank was hired to direct Fantastic Four after the success of his previous superhero film, 2012’s Chronicle, which starred Michael B. Jordan and Dane De Haan. The cast of Fantastic Four included Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell but was met with harshly negative reviews and earned a disappointing $56 million at the domestic box office. In a note Trank tweeted on the eve of the film’s release, the director suggested the movie had become the victim of studio interference. “A year ago I had a fantastic version of this,” he wrote. “And it would’ve received fantastic reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s the reality though.”

Trank’s next movie is Fonzo, which stars Tom Hardy as the notorious gangster, Al Capone.
