Wynonna Earp future in limbo as reports of insufficient funding surface

The future of Syfy’s cult-hit series Wynonna Earp could be in jeopardy.

The Hollywood Reporter reported on Friday that production of the series’ fourth season has been delayed as production company IDW Entertainment has faced financial challenges. The season was ordered last July at Comic-Con but has not begun filming as scheduled, a troubling development which series showrunner Emily Andras highlighted on Twitter on Thursday. Star Melanie Scrofano later added that the series was not in production, questioning why.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, IDW (which pays for the cost of production and owns the rights to the series) has pushed back production as it seeks “funding” to complete the fourth season. “SYFY ordered Season 4 of Wynonna Earp from IDW and is completely committed to the series,” Syfy said in a statement to EW. “This has not changed.” EW has learned, further, that IDW is contractually obligated to produce the show. Syfy does not have control over production.

Deadline has further reported that “IDW Entertainment has indicated that it is experiencing financial difficulties, running a deficit, and cannot proceed with production on a fourth season at this time.”

IDW has not responded to EW’s request for comment. EW has also reached out to Syfy for further clarification of the situation.

“IDW is committed to continuing to tell the Wynonna Earp story,” IDW said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Much like the fans, we are passionate about not only the series, but the comics, the characters and the overall message that the Wynonna Earp franchise carries. We are in the process of working out the details for how the Wynonna story will continue and will share new details very soon.”

On Thursday, Andras tweeted “Don’t f— with my family” after posting a since-deleted tweet rallying the show’s fans — a passionate base referred to as “Earpers” — to fight for its survival.

On Friday, she continued to post comments about the situation, some more cryptic than others. “Sorry I made you change out of your hiatus pants into your battle pantaloons but I waited as long as I could by myself,” she said in one tweet. “Thanks for showing up. If anyone asks, this tweet is about sports.”

She also retweeted comments from fans’ reaction to the news, including “this is f—ing infuriating” and “No one fights harder than an #Earper.” The hashtag #FightforWynonna has emerged as a battle cry for the fandom.
