This Is Us: Preview two scenes from Beth’s backstory episode right now

Beth Pearson, please step into the spotlight.

This Is Us viewers have long been asking the producers of the NBC family drama for more illumination on Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and her life before she met Randall (Sterling K. Brown), and it arrives on Tuesday night in the form of  “Our Little Island Girl,” an episode that takes a break from the tribulations of the Big Three (as well as long-thought-dead relatives) to explore the fan favorite in depth.

Turns out, young Beth had a very promising career in ballet. (That might help to explain that flash-forward scene in which Beth was overseeing a dance studio.) Above, in an exclusive clip from the episode, you can see how Beth’s teacher (Goran Visnjic) believed that with hard work, Beth might become the first African-American dancer in the American Ballet Theatre’s 53-year history. This was an easy sell to Beth’s father (Carl Lumbly), a proud, head-in-the-clouds dreamer, but his proud, practical wife/Beth’s mother (Phylicia Rashad) was a tad more reticent to allow their daughter to chase this goal.

As a bonus, you can check out a second clip set in the present-day, where Beth and her cousin Zoe (Melanie Liburd) road-trip to D.C. to visit Beth’s injured mother and persuade her to consider retirement. Adding to the tense family dynamic is that Beth has not revealed to her mother that she was recently laid off. All sorts of things colliding here for you to enjoy.

“Our Little Island Girl” airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET. For a detailed preview of the episode, head over here.
