Mandy Moore has sent a heartfelt message of support to women who have endured trauma after detailing the psychological abuse she says she experienced while married to Ryan Adams.
“Speaking your truth can be painful and triggering but it’s always worth it,” she wrote in a post on Instagram. “My heart is with all women who have suffered any sort of trauma or abuse. You are seen and heard. #sisterhoodforever”
The singer turned actress is one of several women who were interviewed for a New York Times piece published on Wednesday that alleges Adams engaged in sexual misconduct, using his status in the music industry to prey on aspiring artists, including a budding bass player who was just 14 years old.
Moore recounts the manipulation and control the musician exercised over her, telling the publication he discouraged her from working with other producers and managers and would write songs with her only to replace her with other female artists when it came time to record the track.
“His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s,” she shares.
The This is Us star and Adams wed in 2009 and divorced in 2016. She is now married to singer Taylor Goldsmith.
Adams has denied the claims in both a series of Twitter posts and through his lawyer Andrew B. Brettler.
“I am not a perfect man and I have made many mistakes,” he tweeted. “To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologize deeply and unreservedly.”
He continued, “But the picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate. Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false. I would never have inappropriate interactions with someone I thought was underage. Period.”
Moore’s admission has sparked a wave of support from several stars, who are applauding the 34-year-old for coming forward.
“I see you. I hear you. I know it hurts and I thank you for doing it anyway,” Sophia Bush commented on the post. We’ve all got your back, sister.”
Shane West, Moore’s costar in the 2002 film A Walk to Remember, added that she is the “the strongest woman I know.”
On Twitter, Minka Kelly shared, “I am so proud of the graceful, class act that you are, @TheMandyMoore. You are stronger and braver than most. What a joy it has been to watch you soar these past three years. You’ve only just begun.”
Amber Tamblyn also voiced her encouragement on Twitter. “I believe Mandy Moore and the women who put their necks and careers on the line to tell their stories. We’ve got your backs. #TimesUp,” she wrote.
Moore opened up about her difficult marriage to Adams in a November interview with Glamour, leading Adams to tweet and then delete a series of angry responses, going as far as claiming he was too drugged out to remember their wedding.
“I don’t feel guilty for [the divorce]. I don’t fault myself for it,” she told Glamour. “When people said, ‘I’m sorry,’ I was like, ‘No. Sorry would have been had I stayed in a very unhealthy situation.’ I didn’t. I found my way out. And when I did, things opened back up again.”
