Gwyneth Paltrow says her days as Pepper Potts are over — mostly.
In a new interview with Variety‘s Ramin Setoodeh, the Oscar-winning actress said she expects to stop playing the character after the upcoming Avengers: Endgame.
As Stark Industries CEO, personal confidant, and eventual fiancée, Potts has always been the tether that kept Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man from drifting too far, too fast. Even in the new trailer for the April 26 film, he is seen recording a message to her while lost in deep space.
When they last parted ways, Stark and Potts were talking about maybe starting a family, and in 2013’s Iron Man 3, she event got to wear one of the armored suits as the heroine Rescue.
“I’m a bit old to be in a suit and all that at this point,” said Paltrow, who is 46. “I feel very lucky that I did it, because I actually got talked into it. I was friends with [Iron Man filmmaker] Jon Favreau. It was such a wonderful experience making the first Iron Man and then to watch how important it has become to fans.”
Iron Man was the movie that launched the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008, and although Paltrow said she didn’t expect to play Potts in any significant future roles, she did leave open the possibility of returning for brief appearances.
So … don’t worry so much that this spells doom for her character.
“I feel honored to be a part of something that people are so passionate about,” she said. “Of course, if they said, ‘Can you come back for a day?,’ I will always be there if they need me.”
That’s Pepper. Always reliable.
