In case you missed Molly Ringwald’s April 2018 essay in The New Yorker that reexamined her John Hughes movie through the lens of the #MeToo movement, the actress doesn’t support a reboot of The Breakfast Club — even a hypothetical one.
“You can’t reboot the John Hughes movies,” Ringwald, stopping by Couch Surfing, said. “He doesn’t want it to be done and I don’t think it should be done.”
She continued to explain that that era of rom-coms were “of a certain time” and there are “things that are not appropriate [now] that were barely appropriate then.” That was the core of her New Yorker argument.
Ringwald, who can be seen again returning to Riverdale on the CW, rewatched her old movies with her daughter and wrote specifically of The Breakfast Club, “I hadn’t anticipated that it would ultimately be most troubling to me.”

She made specific note of the scene where Judd Nelson’s character, John Bender, ducks under the desk of Claire (played by Ringwald) and peeks under her skirt when “it’s implied that he touches her inappropriately.” An adult double stood in for Ringwald, who was 16 at the time, but it still made her and her mother uncomfortable.
“What’s more, as I can see now, Bender sexually harasses Claire throughout the film,” Ringwald wrote. “When he’s not sexualizing her, he takes out his rage on her with vicious contempt, calling her ‘pathetic,’ mocking her as ‘Queenie.’ It’s rejection that inspires his vitriol.”
Speaking with Couch Surfing host Lola Ogunnaike, Ringwald said, “I really loved those movies and by no means do I want to turn my back on them, but I would like it for people to take the good from that and are inspired by that to make something that is relevant to what’s going on today because the world is a different place.”
