Marvel Comics will journey to the Galaxy’s Edge Star Wars theme park world

Marvel Comics will offer one of the first ways Star Wars fans can gain access to the new Galaxy’s Edge theme park being constructed at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

The attractions are built to look like a remote new planet, Batuu, and the trading town called Black Spire Outpost, which is nestled among an ancient petrified forest that is now a crumbling array of giant, rocky thorns.

You’ll be able to go joyriding in the fastest ship in the galaxy on the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride, or experience a Resistance attack in deep space from the deck of a First Order starship. Outside the rides, there will be shops and restaurants, and wandering alien characters.

The attraction doesn’t open until this summer in Anaheim, Calif., and this fall in Orlando, Fla., but Marvel will explore Black Spire Outpost long before that in a new five-issue Galaxy’s Edge comic book series.

The books will be written by Ethan Sacks (Old Man Hawkeye) and illustrated by artist Will Sliney (Spider-Man 2099), with the first cover (featuring an Ithor alien, a.k.a. a “hammerhead”) drawn by Rod Reis.

Here’s the official description from Marvel’s announcement: “Black Spire Outpost has long been frequented by smugglers, merchants, and travelers from every corner of the galaxy looking to make their score on the infamous black market — or experience the exotic thrills only the remote world of Batuu has to offer. It’s a place where beings thrive on unique opportunities of the lawless outpost at the edge of space — but the First Order threatens their livelihood…”

The comic creators grew up on Star Wars, and this was a chance to once again play in that “far, far away” world.

“For me personally, this is a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream that started back when I was 4 years old watching the opening crawl for the first time at the Astor Plaza in Times Square during the summer of 1977,” Sacks said in a statement. “This new adventure, set in the wondrous — and dangerous — Black Spire Outpost, will have profound consequences for the Star Wars universe, and fans will be excited to see this story span through the eras and bring together some all-time favorite characters, including Han Solo and Chewbacca!”

Lucasfilm plans to continue introducing the world of Batuu in other elements of its storytelling.

“Black Spire Outpost is a place of endless intrigue and adventure, and what’s uniquely exciting about the Star Wars universe is that we are able to bring these stories to life across multiple platforms including comic books, novels, games, and the immersive experiences we are building in our theme parks,” says Scott Trowbridge, creative executive for the Star Wars portfolio from Walt Disney Imagineering. “Working together with Lucasfilm, we are able to integrate back stories, introduce new characters, as well as reveal previously untold stories about fan-favorite characters and their history with the planet Batuu and its colorful inhabitants.”

Galaxy’s Edge #1 will be released in April.
