Sounds like J.J. Abrams is drawing things to a close on Episode IX.
C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels tweeted that this was the golden protocol droid’s last day of shooting for the film hitting theaters Dec. 20.
Daniels has appeared in every live-action Star Wars film (not always as Threepio; in Solo he played a human mine worker enslaved amongst the Wookiees). Still, there was an ominous sense of finality to his tweet. Fans responded by telling him to keep the robot suit handy in case there is an Episode X.
Information about the next film in the Skywalker saga has been sparse, with far fewer leaks on this one than some of the previous movies. We still don’t have a title for the film, let alone a teaser or trailer.
The only other behind-the-scenes updates have come via Billy Dee Williams, who is returning to costar as charismatic supernova Lando Calrissian. The 81-year-old has occasionally shared pictures and videos of his training regimen during the production.
Mark Hamill will be returning as Luke Skywalker, presumably as a Force ghost, and he told EW’s James Hibberd that security on the film is more intense than any other he’s worked on.
Carrie Fisher’s brother Todd has said the new film will feature more footage of the late actress than fans may realize, with Abrams utilizing never-before-seen deleted scenes from The Force Awakens to give Leia Organa a fitting farewell.
Newcomers to the cast include Naomi Ackie, Keri Russell, and Richard E. Grant in unspecified roles alongside returning castmates Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd.
New details on the film aren’t expected until the Star Wars Celebration fan gathering this April in Chicago.
